My fascination with the natural world and the arts began early. The people and places around me became the foundation I create from today.
Our family would spend timeless days filled with music and reading art books, creating everything we could from an array of supplies and what the artists taught us in glossy, bigger than life paintings. With frequent road trips we escaped into coastal tide pools, lush redwood forests or a desert saturated with sun and sagebrush. Each new adventure took us further into visions of hidden worlds and the many forms of life and energy not seen casually when passing by. We were surrounded by everything beautiful, and imagined primal fears or hope hidden beneath what we saw or felt.
Tree limbs revealed smiles, or the demons of a long-forgotten time. Craggy mountains became solid prophets we might gather strength from. Sun and moon orbs unveiled the desires and emotions moving across a canvas of daily life.
These experiences are reflected in how I perceive and paint today.
My process of creating a painting involves letting go, as the paint and glazes take me where they want to be. When the painting begins to form into shapes and shadows evolving, I will help it along with a possible new direction. Allowing it to grow with random bits of studio life, maybe a selected daughter's hair or wayward dust motes drifting by, layers begin to develop as they are sealed in with another coat of clear glaze.
Eventually, when I feel the visual effect is strong, the painting emerges as a complete piece with it's own unique voice, sharing with you it's own story...
